Marygoround - Information in English

Winner of Best Film at the Gijón International Film Festival, winner for Best Film and Best Actress at Canada’s Fantasia Film Festival and originally selected for SXSW film festival 2020.

Mary (played by renowned theatre actress Grażyna Misiorowska in her cinema-debut) is a lonely, small-town grocery store worker, living a carefree life, quiet and withdrawn. Smoking cigarettes is her only act of rebellion.

More interestingly, she collects statues of Virgin Mary (yes, Mary) in her home, lives by herself and – despite turning 50 – has never had sex. When Mary experiences severe symptoms of menopause she decides to see a gynecologist who prescribes her skin patches of estrogen. However, this common hormone replacement therapy has rather unusual consequences for how Mary experiences her environment.

Daria Woszek’s debut film is a feminist fairytale and a joy for the eye. Her scenography is arranged with great attention to detail and color, reminiscent of Wes Anderson and to some extent Roy Andersson. Her creative portrayal of a woman in her menopause may well be “destined for cult status” (Screen Daily).
