Set in a Hutsul village in Bukovyna between 1937 and 1947, The White Bird Marked with Black follows a family of musicians divided by love, political conviction and the forces of history.
Conceived by Ivan Mykolaichuk and co-written with director Yurii Illienko, the film was one of the first Ukrainian films to address the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). It also marked Bohdan Stupka’s screen debut. Today, it stands as one of the defining works of Ukrainian poetic cinema.
