Black Girl Rising

"Black Girl Rising" is a mind-blowing one woman show that reveals the hidden health effects of racism. Told through a mash up of stand-up comedy, theatrical storytelling and spoken word poetry backed by hand drawn animation, this show explodes stereotypes with laughs, tears and everything in between.

Linnea Tengroth entertains, provokes and educates as she details her own experience of growing up across continents. Her unique experience of race and racism, and how those experiences were internalised, is interwoven with punchy stand up comedy and touching poetry, with stunning hand drawn animations by Brisbane Animator Brydee Lister.

A truly provoking and personal experience, Linnea masterfully holds the audience in a status of insecurity, flipping the normative pressures felt by women of colour onto the audience. Holding them in a space of not knowing wether to laugh, cringe or cry and exploiting this tension to great effect. With plenty of audience engagement and no white privilege to hide behind, if you don’t see this show yourself, you’ll de finitely hear about it.

Black Girl Rising was awarded 'Best New Work by an Emerging Artist' at the 2024 Melbourne Fringe Festival, The 'Emerging Artist' Award at the Perth FringeWorld 2025 Festival, and the 'Sustainability (Peace)' Award at the 2025 Adelaide Fringe Festival.

"An engrossing, informative, kick-ass piece told by a fantastic performer."

"A brilliant show … It is poignant, funny, provocative and vital theatre."

"Bold, confident, important … You will not be disappointed."
