Night Bat

An animation created for the avant-folk music trio Monsieur Doumani from Cyprus, Nychtopapparos (Night Bat) follows the awakening of the night bat beneath the rising full moon, accompanied by the other creatures of the dark. In Cypriot slang, “nychtopapparos” also embodies the restless spirit of those who wander sleeplessly through the night. The animation weaves three interconnected narratives, exploring the concept that “the dreams of those who sleep become the inspiration for those who stay awake.

She is worried about her grandmother’s safety amid the invasion of Ukraine. In this intergenerational conversation across time and space, the granddaughter tries to restore and rethink family memory and her own ethnic identity, break the endless cycle of collective trauma and reflect on the meaning of human life.
